Newspaper comics was my chosen profession. I had a front-row seat to <\/span>Lantern<\/span><\/i> history.<\/span><\/p>\n For years afterward, every time I came back home to Columbus for a visit, my parents or siblings would make the same comments as we passed the northeast corner of Henderson Road and Riverside Drive on the way to my parents\u2019 nearby condo. It was the perfect day to begin my new portrait series for <\/span>The Lantern<\/span><\/i> called \u201cHumans of Ohio State,\u201d an homage to the \u201cHumans of New York\u201d project that was all the rage at that time. Walk around campus, find people to photograph, talk to them about their lives, print the results \u2014 it would be a pleasant supplement to my longer-term work as the investigative John R. The goal is \u201cto shed light on all subjects.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In its initial years <\/span>The Lantern<\/span><\/i> is published by members of the English Department and other campus organizations and operated out of fraternity houses and other off-campus\u00a0 locations (no typewriters yet!).<\/span><\/p>\n Editors are elected by the school\u2019s literary societies. The paper is offered by subscription at one dollar a year or 15 cents for single copies.
