With the growth of social media came a new way of \u201ccalling out\u201d or bringing attention to wrongdoing. \u201cCanceling,\u201d which refers to public backlash for an action or form of speech usually by a celebrity, is believed to have originated in the \u201890s. The slang term grew into a perceived force on the internet in the 2010s and 2020s and a controversial method for holding people accountable.<\/div>\n

The Lantern is the award-winning student newspaper at Ohio State. We are editorially independent of the university and the majority of our funding <\/span>comes from advertisements and endowments, and we receive a small amount from the university to support our Lantern TV studio production.<\/span><\/div>\n
