Wisconsin has stood between Ohio State and a national championship in each of the past two seasons.?
This weekend, the Buckeyes got some payback.
Ohio State swept the defending national champion Badgers, winning 2-1 Friday and 5-3 Saturday and earned its first sweep of Wisconsin since 2023.?
Neither team found the back of the net in the first period Friday, but Wisconsin broke the scoreless tie in the second when senior forward Cassie Hall scored on a power play.
The Buckeyes responded in the third period, converting on a power play goal by junior defenseman Mira Jung?ker to tie the game 7:01 into the period, coming off assists from sophomore forward Hilda Svensson and senior captain Joy Dunne.
“I just saw from the previous power plays that it was very open for me to shoot,” Jung?ker said. “They were taking both [Svensson] and [Dunne] on each flank, so I just felt like I had to take the shot.”
Svensson scored a second power play goal later in the third period for the Buckeyes, giving them a 2-1 lead that they held onto.?
“I think we came out in the second period not very good, so we had to talk through that in between the second and the third, and I think we came out really good in the third,” Svensson said. “I think that [gives] us a lot of confidence that we know we can turn around games.”?
The Badgers took an early 1-0 lead Saturday when Hall scored 34 seconds into the game, but that lead did not last long.?
Vanhanen tied the game on the power play at 7:38, assisted by Jung?ker and the Buckeyes took the lead just 25 seconds later with a score by senior forward Kaia Malachino.
Freshman defenseman Kate Viel extended Ohio State’s 3-1 lead at 13:53 of the first period, but Wisconsin’s Maddy Kimbrel cut the deficit to one 11 seconds later.
The Badgers tied the game early in the second period, but Svensson broke the tie just 10 seconds into the final period.?
Vanhanen added an insurance goal later in the period to seal the 5-3 win.?
In the Buckeyes’ two wins over Wisconsin, Ohio State had five different goal scorers, with eight players recording an assist.
“It just shows that we are dangerous,” head coach Nadine Muzerall said. “You can’t just try to shut down one line or a couple players. We’re in waves of a threat coming after, one shift after another.”
